- Kiera Wong Yin Xuen swept both the Girls’ U-15 Singles and Doubles categories at the tenth and final Qualifying Round of the Allianz Junior Badminton Championship (AJBC) 2025 powered by MoveNow, subsequently securing her place in the AJBC 2025 powered by MoveNow Grand Finals.
- Held in Butterworth, Penang recently, the Qualifying Round witnessed Kiera, a student at SMK Puchong Jaya B, teaming up with K. Nehaa Barathi from Sri KDU Kota Damansara to bag the Girls’ U-15 Doubles over Melody Heng Yen Xe and Ooi Chu Han, both from SMJK Jit Sin SKK.
- Kiera also won the Girls’ U-15 Singles after defeating Tan Zhi Ying, who attends SMK St Mark and was the second runner-up in the Girls’ U-13 Singles at the AJBC 2024 Grand Finals last year, as well as runner-up in the Girls’ U-13 Doubles alongside partner Yong Hui Zeng.
- 14-year-old Zhi Ying moved from her hometown of Ipoh, Perak to Penang last year to train full time at Lee KS Badminton Academy, while staying with her coach in Butterworth as her parents remain in Ipoh.
- “I do miss my parents but they visit me quite often so it’s not too bad. My focus is solely on badminton and I’m happy with that decision,” Zhi Ying said.
- In the Boys’ U-15 Singles category, Fong Carson from SMJK Keat Hwa beat Nur Izz Danish of SMK Tun Perak for the title.
- Carson also put up a fight in the Boys’ U-15 Doubles final with partner Ng Chia Tin from SMK Pengkalan Lebai Man, but ultimately fell to the pair of Bernard Tieu Kang Zheng of SMK St Mark and Thariinas N.S. Javaseelan from SMK Taman Inderawasih.
- Over on the U-13 courts, Jorus Lee Yi H’Ng of SJKC Kampung Valdor triumphed over Nur Izz Daniel for the Boys’ U-13 Singles title. First place in the Boys’ U-13 Doubles was clinched by Lim Yu Hong of Jit Sin Independent High School and Teh Thean Le from SMJK Heng Ee following their win over Ashton Khoo and Tan Yi Jun, also from SMJK Heng Ee.
- Izzriya Batrisya from SMK Bandar Baru Sungai Long nabbed the Girls’ U-13 Singles title after beating Chuah Tian Ning from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Methodist. However, Tian Ning emerged victorious in the Girls’ U-13 Doubles, teaming up with Cynthia Ooi of Jit Sin Independent High School to defeat the pair of Lee Jie Yu from SMJK Heng Ee and Syarifah Fashira Dayana of SMK Machang Bubuk Penang.
- A total of 304 players took part in this Qualifying Round, the last of 10 rounds which will culminate in the year-end Grand Finals.
- The Grand Finals of the AJBC 2025 powered by MoveNow, featuring U-13 and U-15 finalists from all the Qualifying Rounds, will take place in Kuala Lumpur from 5 – 9 November 2025. Each round will see 24 players qualifying for the finals. The U-11 players will not advance to the Grand Finals.
- As in previous years, players participating in the Qualifying Rounds are not required to pay any entrance fees. The top three winners in the Qualifying Rounds, for all age categories, will earn RM500, RM300 and RM150 (singles) and RM600, RM400 and RM200 (doubles). Players finishing in the top three at the Grand Finals will pocket RM1,000, RM600 and RM300 (singles) and RM1,200, RM800 and RM400 (doubles).
- All registrations for the AJBC 2025 powered by MoveNow have been closed. The AJBC powered by MoveNow is supported by the Sports, Co-curricular and Arts Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia and the Badminton Association of Malaysia.
